The Best Basement Restaurants and Bars

TTF Features - The Best Basement Restaurants and Bars

Underground's the last place we want to be in the summer when there’s so many parks, terraces and rooftop bars to be exploring instead but here at TryThisFor, we think going underground has it’s plus sides - especially when it involves food, drink and great company. Perfect for disguising any sunburned bits too.

8 Broadwick Street, London W1F 8HN

Two bright sparks came up with the brilliant idea of a desserts-only dalliance and Basement Sate was born. Doing inspired things with pastry, fruit, chocolate and all things sweet, this is the perfect place to end up after dinner elsewhere. Our suggestion would be to go on the Tuesday where they pair desserts and cocktails for two, or book yourself in for a Masterclass and learn how to make the dishes yourself.

BLACKLOCK | Venue Page and Details Here

The Basement, 24 Great Windmill Street, London W1D 7LQ

If you haven’t heard of Blacklock, where have you been? This chop shop is on everyone’s hit list thanks to its location (in a former brothel) and its brains (Hawksmoor alumni). Think huge hunks of meat cooked on the homemade charcoal grill and an old clothes iron (yep, really) and lashings of side dishes to coax you out from the meat sweats. A meat lover’s paradise.

ZOILO | Venue Page and Details Here

9 Duke Street, Marylebone W1U 3EG

Chef Diego Jacquet wanted to show London the best of Argentina, so brought his exclusive catering to England. Thank goodness he did. With flavours from all over the country, Zoilo, Jacquet’s second opening, is a culinary journey through various regions that isn’t just ‘meat on a stick’. There’s some tempting seafood and empanadas alongside the more traditional asado, all of which makes it difficult to choose. The restaurant’s unassuming, and the portions hearty with the right bit of Latino love to keep you coming back for more. Definitely not budging from our list.

WC | Venue Page and Details Here

Clapham Common South Side, London SW4 7AA

These guys do good double meanings. Not only does WC stand for the former facilities you’ll be sitting in but also for the wine and charcuterie you’ll you’ll be enjoying whilst you’re there.  Beautifully decked out with plenty of nods to its previously less luxurious life, this is one place you’ll want to spend your pennies. We say order the superior board to satisfy some serious cheese and meat cravings and drink it all in, this place is a perfect comfort break.

LA BODEGA NEGRA | Venue Page and Details Here

9 Old Compton Street, London W1D 5JF

Not one for the prudes, the entrance to La Bodega Negra is disguised by brightly flashing neon signs that scream Soho’s salacious past (and present) to the rooftops. There’s a devilish charm to this subterranean hangout with plush booths and an intimate atmosphere that’s complemented by the Mexican menu. Forget London, let the Latino love flow in.

PACHAMAMA | Venue Page and Details Here

18 Thayer Street, London W1U 3JY

From Mexican to Peruvian, the New World is showing us how it’s done these days. This bright and breezy basement uses British ingredients in Peruvian dishes and boy, are we a fan. Classic ceviches follow surprising sliders, all topped off with a pisco cocktail or two. They’ve just launched a boozy brunch menu and we can’t think of anywhere better to kickstart the weekend.

2 Highgate Road, London NW5 1NR

Yes, we’ve featured a second former public bathroom-turned-bar on the list but only because we think it’s worth it. Nestled up in Highgate, Ladies & Gentlemen is a cocktail bar that repurposes its history and its location into its drinks with berries from Hampstead Heath and Kentish Town honey making their way onto the menu. Cosy and jazzy, it’s proving popular so head over early for a prized spot at the bar.

OLD TOM & ENGLISH | Venue Page and Details Here

187 Wardour Street, London W1F 8ZB

Modern British food, vintage cocktails, 60s decor in an 18th century basement. Still with us? Good, because Old Tom & English is a place we think you’ll love. There are small plates to share, of course, that refreshingly aren’t run of the mill and cocktails are of the strong variety. Channel your inner Don Draper or Joan Holloway and make it a gin Old Fashioned, just for kicks.

HAKKASAN | Venue Page and Details Here

8 Hanway Place, London W1T 1HD

Any dim sum lover worth their salt has Hakkasan on their list. The group is internationally renowned for their Cantonese cuisine and their original London outpost in Hanway Place is a beauty with labyrinthine carved wood and a cool bar that rustles up some seriously good drinks. The Dim Sum Sunday deal is worth heading into town for: 6 courses for £48 and perfectly curated cocktails that are just begging to be Instagrammed.

SPITALFIELDS BAR (hawksmoor) | Venue Page and Details Here

157a Commercial Street, London E1 6BJ

Hawksmoor’s baby brother, Spitalfields Bar on Commercial Street packs a punch. More casual than it’s upstairs counterpart, it’s a great place to meet after work for your carnivorous fix without breaking the bank. Think burgers, hot dogs and ox cheek French dips and a sherry trifle for after, because gluttony never tasted so good.

View Coya Venue Page Here

118 Piccadilly, Mayfair W1J 7NW | 020 7042 7118

A visit to coya is a night out in itself, their Pisco Bar specializes in bespoke pisco infusions unique to Coya and boasts over 40 tequilas with an extensive rum list. The drinks are complimented with music from either bands or DJ’s exploring Latin American culture which gives great ambiance and a fantastic start or end to your meal. The main dining room overlooks an open charcoal grill and serves up dishes including Ox heart with Aji rocotto parsley and Lamb chops with crushed aubergines. On Sundays a Champagne Brunch is available form £59 a head, where you can choose from slow roasted pulled pork, Chilean seabass, or a lobster, chimichurri, cucumber and avocado salad.

224 Brick Lane, London E1 6SA

Not strictly a basement, Back In Five Minutes is the permanent plot for the pop-up Disappearing Dining Club. Hidden behind a clothes shop in Brick Lane is a quirky little dining club with a small but perfectly formed menu that’s sure to please. British ingredients. Check. Classic cocktails. Check. Vintage dress code? Only if that’s your bag, baby, but you can pick something up on the way in.
