Welcome to The Gate Islington, award-winning restaurant and younger sibling of our original project The Gate Hammersmith. Originally started to keep us busy while we re-developed our original site in time for its 25th birthday celebrations, it has developed nicely into its own highly successful entity. Adrian and Michael Daniel have been running London's most successful vegetarian restaurant since December 1989. The cooking at the Gate reflects the diverse cultural background in which we grew up - what one might call Indo-Iraqi Jewish. Our grandmothers blended Indian and Arabic cuisines with the traditional Jewish food. It became perfectly natural that we should apply the same principles at the restaurant. The food we serve is the food of our childhood, modulated by French and Italian influence. When we opened theGate, we had had no formal training and knew nothing about running a restaurant - we were just a couple of guys who knew what we liked to eat - but we knew that food was sacred and should be celebrated. At the restaurant we try and celebrate the food. This means, amongst other things, that we source our ingredients with care*; we intensify flavour by careful cooking and by combining ingredients in unexpected ways; we try to make our dishes asvisually pleasing as possible; and we tryand do this in a fun and relaxed way.
The Gate is a bright and breezy kind of place. All high ceilings and wooden floors, this fresh-faced restaurant is the younger sister of a successful Hammersmith favourite. This is a place that forgets the meat and makes vegetables the main affair. The menu’s seasonal so during the winter expect lots of root veg and earthy flavours whilst summer is all about the light salads, of course. The wine list is longer than you’d imagine so get stuck in and find the perfect glass of something something to accompany you maple syrup creme brulee. After a little bit of healthiness, you need a bit of naughtiness, after all.
