Big Fernand has crossed the Channel for its first venture on UK soil. Located a stone’s throw from Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street on Percy Street, this central London burger workshop is big on French flavours and Parisian savoir-faire. What is this ‘hamburger’ you speak of? It’s hamburgés that Big Fernand deals in, marrying the comforting American classic with French gastronomy to deliver the crème de la crème of burgers.
Step up to the counter and meet the expressive, smiling and friendly Fernands, complete with berets and promising a frivolous tête-à-tête as you decide on your order. Choose from six classic combinations or ‘build your own’ from scratch, tailoring to your tastes with a dizzying 3,840 distinctly French possibilities. The produce is parfait; a local London boulanger uses an exclusive recipe to deliver fresh, sesame seed-sprinkled burger buns while aged, unpasteurised cheese comes direct from the French countryside, arriving into London in large wheels and sliced in-house, before each shift. Have your beef just as you like it, from blue through to well done, or shake things up by choosing lamb, chicken or rose veal before topping with Tomme de Savoie, farmhouse goat’s cheese, blue Fourme d’Ambert or oozy, melting Raclette. The next layer is grilled vegetables, caramelised onions or fresh spinach leaves followed by a generous drizzle of homemade Tonton sweet mayo, barbecue or cocktail sauce and a final flourish of hand-chopped fresh herbs.
Fernandines, hand-cut frites Française, complement burgers with a salty crunch while a selection of thirst quenchers include Maison Chapoutier red, white and rosé wines, ice-cold bottles of Jade – organic French ‘blonde’ beer – and a choice of Big Fernand’s own lemonades including pamplemousse (grapefruit) and citron (lemon) flavours. Whether you eat in-house or decide to take away, this newcomer on the burger scene is super-speedy. Expect your hamburgés in less than a minute, leaving you a longer lunch break or more time with your friends. The downstairs restaurant features a Parisian palette of black accented by wooden features throughout including a bespoke counter finished in a stacked, wooden block effect. Reclaimed old-style French signage adorns the walls alongside vintage photographs while a blend of spotlights and exposed bulb lighting sets the scene. In contrast, wind up the central iron staircase where you’ll be met with a very different affair: French Bourgeois-meets-granny’s-living-room with focal-point fireplace, floral wallpaper, large windows and comfy, mismatched seating. Shelves are lined with dainty decorative trinkets, candlesticks and family photographs while mini vintage armoires house antique books.
Big Fernand make their first trip across The Chanel and set up shop in Fitzrovia, bringing with them a hurricane of burgers (or burges). As well as more than three thousand combinations of burgers (with their build your own burger option) there will also be some compulsory French additions such as wine and cheese, and fancy dress. Big Fernand is a part of highly popular market in London but the fresh approach and multitude of burger combinations ensure you can have something different everytime... in fact.. you can have a different burger every day for ten years.. Oohh La La!
