School may be out but the rest of London is hard at work serving up some sweet, sweet subsistence. We've rounded up a few of the new openings this month as well as a couple of perennial favourites perfect for enjoying during July. We're holding out for a heatwave but whether or not we get it, here's what's hot on the foodie scene right now.
PLAYGROUND AND PROOF, london fields
View Website | Field Works, Martello Street, London E8 3QW
Market by day, bar by night, Playground & Proof is the latest rooftop location to open in super trendy London Fields. A stone's throw away from Netil House and Broadway Market, Playground (the market) and Proof (the bar) wants to shake things up a little as an evolving events space, with some of London's newest faces keeping you well-watered. If you're looking to eat, head over during market hours for grilled cheese from The Cheese Truck, otherwise the evening bar is great for a post-work session whilst surveying the savannah (London Fields) below.

BALLS & COMPANY, soho

It's a simple concept done well - Meatballs, all the meatballs!! Comfort food this is but not like mama used to make, in fact it's the brainchild of a Masterchef Australia finalist. Choose your ball (wagyu beef, pork, chicken, salmon or quinoa) then your sauce (tomato, bechamel, romesco or pesto) and a bottle of wine for a casual evening in Central.

THE INDOOR GARDEN @ the little yellow door
Venue Page Here | 68 Notting Hill Gate, London W11 3HT
The housemates behind The Little Yellow Door have had a summer spruce up and opened an indoor garden to be enjoyed whatever the weather's doing outside. Think picket fences and deck chairs, drinks served in watering cans and aquariums and a four course Mexican dinner cooked up by the newest addition to the family. There's cornbreads and salsas, lamb asados and petit fours being served, which is a world away from BBQ fare but you'd hardly expect the norm from the guys behind the Door, would you?

CRAB TAVERN, broadgate circle
Venue Page Here | Unit 7, Broadgate Circle, London EC2M 2QS
'London's best crab restaurant has arrived', we're confidently told and we're definitely excited. We've had the lobster love for a while so we're pleased that crabs are getting the attention they deserve too. There's soft shell crab burgers, king crab legs, whole crab for two to share and a crab platter as well as a host of other classic non-crabby dishes but we're not entirely sure why you'd want to stray away from crustaceans really. It may be suit central in the Circle but the moody wooden restaurant will have you feeling that sea breeze, just you wait.

It opened in December but we think July's the perfect time to enjoy Lardo Bebe, the little sister of the popular trattoria Lardo. Make like you're on holiday with this effortlessly chic Italian, and lose yourself in the small but perfectly formed menu. The pizzas are great, thanks to the wood-fired menu, and the best bit? They deliver! Forget Dominos, these boys know how to keep you happy at home.

A roundabout may not be the most aesthetically pleasing destination (unless you're looking for the Magic Roundabout) but it's worth heading to the Lea Bridge Roundabout for Rootdown. Brother and sister team Ben and Becca are making sustainable sexy with real efforts to have a minimal impact on the environment. All food is sourced within 60 miles of the restaurant and put into seasonal dishes. Currently on the menu: octopus, pork belly and freekeh broccoli. We can't wait to see what else they rustle up.

MAGIC ROUNDABOUT - BURGER BEAR AND PRAWNOGRAPHY
View Website | Old Street Roundabout, Old Street Station EC1Y 1BE
Disused no more, the space above Old Street Station has been transformed into a burger and seafood extravaganza thanks to a little bit of crowdfunding. Burger Bear and Prawnography have teamed up to take you through the day from 7am to 11pm, with plentiful burgers and enormous, Instagrammable whole crab on hand. There's a cocktail bar too (natch) and some seriously good disco beats. No Dougals, Ermintrudes or Zebedees in sight.

OINK SWINE DINING
View Website | Crisis Cafe, 67 Commercial Street, E1 6LT
Three courses and a drink for £25, every Friday and Saturday night. A piggy pop-up, this is sure to please the meat eaters amongst you. Kick off with a bacon infused Bloody Mary, dive into the sharing plate and then choose your main (pulled pork, ribs or loin/belly), pile up a few sides and try not to think about Babe. Thankfully pudding is a meat-free crumble and it's a challenge to squeeze it in after all that porcine goodness but worth every attempt. Pig in the city indeed.

Greek might not be the obvious choice of cuisine but Suvlaki's apparently the new place to be. Souvlaki is street food - meat skewers grilled over charcoal served as is or in a pitta - and where else to eat it than in Soho? You're free to choose but we suggest the Suvlaki Exuberance, which gives you a bit of everything from the menu, because you may as well go all in, right? Skewers, wraps, four sides and a pitta burger all for £34. Just add a Greek beer and a shot of ouzo and you'll be up on Olympus with the best of them.

Another pop-up becomes permanent. Chefs James Ramsden and Sam Herilhy have taken their The Secret Larder supperclub to bricks and mortar as Pidgin in Hackney. Offering a four course set menu that changes weekly, the intimate dining experience lives on. Last week's menu included whipped lardo, octopus and apple and a cocktail mixing rye with pickled watermelon at £7.50, and we're looking forward to seeing what else pops up. £35 a head and enough space for 30 people, Pidgin's got our feathers ruffled for sure.

The chef behind Polpo has gone his own way with Oldroyd, an Islington bistro. Sticking to small plates that track their way through Europe, Tom Oldroyd has pulled together an impressive menu that changes daily and shows off his keen eye. He hopes it'll become a neighbourhood favourite, and we're sure it will, as the laidback set up is sure to keep you coming back for more. We're keen to try the Cornish seaweed and cider salami, and peach and cow curd panzanella but we're simultaneously scared that we'll never want to leave. We can move in, right?

Merci Marie is simply beautiful. Very pristine, very white but very beautiful. Step inside on a Friday night (it's only open once a week) and you'll find yourself in Pinterest heaven. But it's not just the decor that's worth gushing about; a modern European menu awaits. Expect summery dishes such as pan fried salmon with harissa and poached peach in a lemon verbena syrup, and an intimate, atmospheric evening.
