NATIONAL BURGER DAY - BEST BURGERS IN LONDON

TTF Features - NATIONAL BURGER DAY - BEST BURGERS IN LONDON

27-August-2015

We think burgers should be celebrated every day but cholesterol and calories have other ideas. So National Burger Day is the perfect time to salute one of the greatest things to have ever happened to food. Here is a run down of our all time favourite places to get your burger on.

ZOILO, Marylebone

Argentine cuisine is a fascinating mx of cultures, the result of a vibrant heritage and transcendental immigration history. At Zoilo we proudly embrace this cultural diversity and celebrate our tremendous passion for food. Renowned Argentine Chef Diego Jacquet established “Zoilo” Catering in 2007 with the only aim to showcase the best of Argentine food and wine in the UK. The true meaning behind the entire ceremony of our traditional & renowned “Argentine Asado” is the simple desire to share. At Zoilo our menus will offer truthful “Cocina Argentina” dishes to share exploring the different regions & products of the country, from Patagonia to Salta & the Pampas to Mendoza. The entire wine list is from Argentina, with the majority available by 375ml carafe, allowing guests to sample different wines throughout their meal.

THE JOINT, Marylebone

We love success stories here at TTF and The Joint is no exception. A burger joint that started life as a pop-up - perhaps no surprises there but it's the attention to the detail that keeps us coming back for more. The Asian burger's a great mouthful of pulled pork, ginger, spring onion and slaw while the beef lovers will enjoy the short rib burger with bacon relish served in a potato bun. It's a small place with long tables made for sharing, swapping and socialising with a little bit of outside space for the brave. Beer comes from the Brixton Brewery, cocktails are served in Kilners - this is one hip little joint well worth a visit.

BAR BOULUD, Knightsbridge

This bistro in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is the London contingent of the popular original New York joint. Inspired by winemaking, the interior is sleek and sophisticated with a classic zinc topped bar and leather banquettes and vaulted ceilings, lending a kind of richness to the atmosphere. The food is exquisitely French with hearty rich sausages and cuts of meat, alongside fresh fruits de mers to have yourself or share with friends. Predictably there’s a great wine list, under the watchful eye of sommelier David Vareille. Ask him for the perfect recommendation and he’ll come up trumps with a ‘healthy dose of adventure and discovery’

BLEECKER STREET BURGER, Spitalfields

Bringing ‘the best New York burger to a street corner near you’, this food truck is straight from the city the other side of the pond. Serving up the classic burger four ways (cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, blue burger and a veggie option) in toasted buns and secret sauce, these guys are good for on the go. Simple food done well, make sure you catch them by keeping up with their Twitter. Or alternatively call them up and get them to come flip their burgery brilliance at your party and be the toast of the town. Just because.

BOOM BURGER, Notting Hill

Boom Burgers are a little bit different. An explosion of flavours, all given the Jamaican treatment, and smothered with things like bacon jam and avocado salsa. Born from a lack of good burgers in Montego Bay, Boom Burger has burst onto the Portobello scene with some of the most beautiful looking burgers we’ve seen. As you might imagine, things are a little fun with bright red banquettes or a bar to enjoy some signature cocktails. It’s a little less intimate than you might expect, but you’ll be amongst friends, strangers, and the best of them here. These burgers are Jamaicin’ us crazy! Grab the Jerk Boom, with jerky chicken and fried plantain, all oozing with mango and raw paw sauce. For the vegetarians there’s also the Veggie Boom, an explosion of roasted sweet potatoes with chilli jam and avocado salsa. Phwoar, this is reggae in a bite. Boom. (Had to say it).

BURGER & LOBSTER, Mayfair

As if you couldn’t guess, there’s only two things served here, done three ways. But boy, are they done well. Choose from a juicy 10oz burger (cheese and bacon optional) in a brioche bun, a lobster roll (lobster meat in a wasabi mayo) in a brioche bun or - our favourite, obviously - a whole lobster, steamed or grilled, with garlic lemon butter on the side. You get string fries and a dressed salad on the side, whatever you choose and the damage? £20. Yes, just £20. Beginning life as a pop-up, this inspired combination now has several joints over the city and there’s always a queue. Unsurprisingly, no bookings (unless there’s more than 6 of you, and you’re going to the Soho site) but this little place is a firm favourite not to be missed.

GOODMAN, Mayfair

Tucked off Regent Street, Goodman is a steakhouse to rival all steakhouses. They age their meat onsite, all six tonnes of it. Then they present the cuts at your table for you to choose from. Everyone wants to feel like a hunter-gatherer, of course! No neanderthals here though, the interior is smart and sophisticated, with the slickest of services. These guys truly know their meat and wine, leaving you feeling part of a long-standing club. Steakhouse stalwart’s leather and wood panelling make an appearance but here it suits, rather than becoming contrived. Goodman feels a bit of an experience so make a day of it - after all, this beef is worth the wait.

HONEST BURGERS, Brixton

If you ask most Londoners where their favourite burger spot is, most will shout Honest Burgers. There’s something about the British-only produce and simplicity, as well as chunky wooden tables and casual atmosphere that keeps people coming back. The beef is Ginger Pig dry aged and worth loading with Stilton or Red Leicester, but the vegetarians amongst you will be happy with the market vegetable fritter served up in Honest’s glazed bun, accompanied by beetroot and apple slaw. All burgers come with the house fries (rosemary salted, naturally) and a side of complete satisfaction.

LITTLE SOCIAL, Mayfair

Little Social is Michelin starred Pollen Street Social’s little sister. Tucked away behind Regent Street, you’ll find a nod to France in the plates, with comfortingly British ingredients. All dark wood and banquettes, it’s a little less formal than its counterpart across the road with langoustines and terrine to start, followed by pork and truffle sausage or the aged Scottish beef burger with caramelised red onions. As you can imagine from a Michelin starred chef, this isn’t an ordinary burger but one that you’ll be dreaming about for months to come. Of course, the service is brilliant and the dishes perfectly executed, and if you’re on a budget there’s even a prix fixe menu. Decadent dining at its best.

MEAT MARKET, Covent Garden

Where it all began - the original permanent spot for the for 'MEAT' group is where you'll find arguably their best burgers. As well as holding the crown for the original dirty burger, MEATmarket is also one of London's best purveyor of this unstoppable dish. You may have to queue but that's a small price to pay for one of the best London has to offer.

PATTY & BUN, Marylebone

Patty & Bun is another of London’s worst kept burger secrets. Eat in, take away, just get there when you can as this place is crazily popular. There are six burgers to choose from - all brilliantly named of course, what about the ‘Lambshank Redemption’ burger? - which come served in brioche buns with mountains of smoky patty & bun mayo. The flavours here are great with lots of attention to burger detail and they’re real works of art, all wrapped up in striped burger paper. Order the rosemary chips that burst out of their little pewter pot and finish with a salted caramel choc ice before hurtling back onto the streets, completely and utterly satisfied.

STOKEY BEARS, Hackney

Burger bars at street markets are all the range. Tom’s Burger Bear is fast becoming a firm favourite on the mean streets of London, as well as being a regular resident at The Old Nun’s Head. Tom mixes up the menu so you’ll never be quite sure what’ll be on the board for the day but that’s part of the fun. Over Christmas, he was serving up a Bear Royale with a beef patty, a pork patty, American cheese and his secret sauce all in a toasted bun with fresh salad. It’s a catch-it-if-you-can kind of place but head down to Nunhead for the residency if you’re need of the fix.
